Secret Bird Watching Dream Land

Shierjia Wetland was once part of the old Dongshan River channel. Due to its low-lying terrain and year-round water accumulation, vast marshlands gradually formed, creating a rich wetland ecosystem and an important habitat for waterbirds and migratory birds.

Today, Shierjia Wetland is designated as a National Important Wetland, covering approximately 298 hectares across Wujie Township, Dongshan Township, and Su’ao Township in Yilan County. The name “Shierjia,” meaning “52 Jia,” is believed to come from the approximately 52 jia of land that were cultivated here in earlier times.

With expansive rice fields, marshes, views of the Dongshan River, and abundant birdlife, Shierjia Wetland has become one of Yilan’s hidden gems for birdwatchers and nature photographers.

With its diverse waterways and marshland habitats, Shierjia Wetland has recorded more than 150 bird species over the years. From October to February, large numbers of migratory birds arrive to spend the winter, making this one of the best times for birdwatching.

Visitors may have the chance to spot species such as Horned Grebes, Black-necked Grebes, Purple Herons, Greater White-fronted Geese, Falcated Ducks, and Bean Geese. Other waterbirds, including Black-winged Stilts, Grey Herons, and Great Egrets, are also commonly seen throughout the wetland.

With expansive rice fields, marshes, views of the Dongshan River, and abundant birdlife, Shierjia Wetland has become one of Yilan’s hidden gems for birdwatchers and nature photographers.

In addition to birdwatching, Shierjia Wetland is also a well-known summer flower-viewing destination in Yilan.

Barringtonia racemosa typically blooms from June to September, with peak flowering usually occurring in June and July. After nightfall, rows of pinkish-white blossoms gradually open and hang gracefully from the branches, resembling fireworks blooming in the night sky. For this reason, they are often described as “summer night fireworks.”

Besides admiring the flowers, visitors can also enjoy beautiful views of the Dongshan River and the surrounding wetland scenery.

One of the most fascinating features of Barringtonia racemosa is the short life of each flower. The buds remain closed during the day and gradually bloom after nightfall, with the best viewing time beginning at around 7 p.m. By the following morning, the flowers begin to wither, earning them the romantic nickname “Beauty of a Single Night.”

With its flat terrain, Shierjia Wetland is ideal for a relaxing bicycle ride. Cycling along the Dongshan River and around the wetland, visitors can enjoy rice fields, marshes, waterbirds, and riverside scenery, with a different landscape in every season.

One charming sight is the egrets that sometimes linger near local anglers, waiting for a chance to share in a freshly caught fish. This everyday interaction adds another unique touch to the wetland experience.

For a longer cycling trip, the route can also be combined with the Dongshan River Bikeway, Dongshan River Water Park, and other nearby attractions. The riverside bikeway is relatively easy and suitable for riders of different ages.
